Hi there,
Welcome to the Brave The Page book club. I’m here with Riley to guide you through today’s book club reading of chapter three, “This Is For The Truth-Teller.” In this chapter, I share about the various roles we play over the years, such as the scapegoat, the good girl, the caregiver, and others, within our family units. These roles, unfortunately, become masks we wear well into adulthood, often hindering us from stepping into our fullest truth.
Consider the roles that you may have had to take on as a child. Are they roles that still show up today? Have they impacted the way you speak up, speak honestly, or write the truest version of yourself?
This was probably one of the scariest chapters for me to write, because it disclosed many of the ways I’ve hidden over the years and how the fear of being a truth teller kept me bound in silence and smallness. Writing this helped me step even further into my truth. I hope that as you reflect on what it means to be a truth-teller, you will also experience an awakening of your own truth.
Here’s my favorite quote from this chapter to leave you with: “Know this: the Truth-Teller is a healer, a rebel, a disrupter, and a catalyst for change. The Truth-Teller shakes us to our core, makes us honest, confronts our demons, and validates our desires. The Truth-Teller is a spiritual guide, an artist, and a word warrior. The Truth-Teller is a sword that divides us and the healing balm that unites us. The Truth-Teller is wild and dangerous and the liberator we need. The Truth-Teller is not someone we arrive at becoming; the Truth-Teller is a choice we make every single day when we advocate for our voice. So speak your truth, feel the fear, and be the Truth-Teller you long to be because you are worthy of it.”
Here are a few prompts to consider:
+ What roles did you play growing up?
+ How did they impact your voice?
+ What does being a truth teller mean?
+ How can you step into that role more?
Please let me know what awakens for you, which quotes stand out, and anything else you’d like to share. I look forward to hearing from you.
Love, Megan
