Famous writers and creatives Human Design Readings
Mini readings for Emily Dickinson, Andy Warhol, Louis Armstrong, Patti Griffin, and Margaret Atwood
Hi y’all,
Last week, I introduced you to the basics of Human Design and how it can offer insights into your life as a writer and creative. I wanted to break down the five different types of artists and writers throughout history that have inspired us.
First up, Emily Dickinson is a 1/4 emotional projector.
What is a Projector type in Human Design? They make up about 20% of the population and are here to guide energy, people, ideas, etc in a certain direction. I like to describe these projectors as mirrors since they so powerfully show us clearly back to ourselves and our true intent. In regard to writing and creativity, projectors offer a deeply introspective perspective that encourages us to open ourselves even more with their example.
Emily Dickinson was a prolific poet and a 1/4 emotional projector. Although she wrote thousands of poems, much of her work wasn’t discovered until after her death. She was an incredibly secluded person, withdrawing into her private space and spending time with only those few who were very close to her in friendship and family. This is not surprising as she has gate 40 (think personality traits) in her chart– the gate of aloneness. This gate highlights her private nature but also her longing for connection. This gate is lit up as a full channel as the 3740 community channel. A very emotional and devoted channel. From what we know of Emily, she was deeply devoted to her family and her pen. Her isolation offered deep solace and connection to the page. As she wrote, “I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word. Sometimes, I write one and look at it until it begins to shine.”
Second, Andy Warhol is a Pure Generator.
What is a generator type in Human Design? Generators are considered the most common type, making up around 70% of the population. Generators are like motors. They get things done! If we didn’t have generators in our world, it would be incredibly hard to turn those many ideas into a reality. Generators are like the pulse of our planet and need to be doing work they love or are supremely interested in. If they are, then they can work hard with focus and passion. In regard to writers and creatives, generators will not be satisfied ruminating in an idea phase; they want to build something and see their work come to life.
Andy Warhol, a prolific artist, is a 1/3 pure generator. His line 1 is the investigator, and line 3 is the martyr. Basically, Andy was someone who was on the hunt for meaning and discovery and often went through many trials and errors to find it. As a pure generator, he was able to work hard and convert that creative idea into action. Not surprisingly, he also had The Artist Channel in his chart, validating his path to a creative. Our design guides our creative path, and we can see that so evidently through Andy’s design.
Third, Louis Armstrong is a 5/1 Pure Manifesting Generator.
What is a Manifesting Generator type in Human Design? The MG makes up about 32% of the population and is known for its multi-passionate personality. They are Generators in that they are still builders, but they tend to move at super speed, juggling a number of different interests and projects. Regarding writers and creatives, it would not be uncommon for an MG to have lots of projects or hobbies at once. In fact, this type thrives on being busy and multi-tasking.
Louis Armstrong is a 5/1 pure manifesting generator. He is known for his Jazz trumpeting and raspy voice. Making music that made our hearts dance. I have a special fondness as we are both from Louisiana and love that New Orleans culture. His aura was one that drew people in. He has a number of gates lit up that confirm what we have seen in him. Gate 58 represents joy and vitality. Can’t you just see that in his smile? Gate 1 also represents creativity. He was made to create and see art in everything he did and in the way he lived. Lastly, he had two channels that I think you’re going to love– the channel of rhythm and the channel of beat. I can’t imagine anyone else being more fit for those channels. Oh yes, thank you, Louis, for making your design so beautiful for us!
Fourth, Patti Smith is a 5/1 emotional Manifestor.
What is a Manifestor type in Human Design? Manifestors are a bit more rare, with only around 9% of the world’s population represented. Manifestors have an incredibly strong voice, opinion, and willpower. They are a well of creative ideas and thrive in initiating those ideas out into the world. The manifestors have a powerful aura that either draws folks to them or draws them away. That’s okay, though; you’re not meant for everyone and the folks you are meant to connect to really vibe. For writers and creatives, you are made to move forth with boldness with what you want to create, even if it doesn’t make sense to others. Follow your pulse, share openly, and your people will find you.
Patti Smith is a prolific writer, musician, and 5/1 emotional manifestor. She is wildly creative, and with her lit-up gate 11 of ideas, we can see why. She has an open and undefined g-center in her energy centers. The g-center is like the GPS for your identity and following your inner direction in life. Since hers is open, she is incredibly fluid and adaptable in terms of personality and pursuits. This is an incredible gift in terms of her creative path as she is able to dabble in a number of different genre styles as well as music ability. Ultimately, her open g-center says I am an open book. I am ever-changing. I am becoming. The thing to watch for with an open and undefined g-center is not to become such a chameleon that you lose yourself and adapt your personality in order to make others comfortable. Over time, this open center, when understanding your design, creates deep wisdom and confidence in yourself.
Lastly, Margaret Atwood is a 2/4 Reflector
What is a Reflector type in Human Design? Reflectors are incredibly rare, making up only 1-2% of all the human design types. I’ve actually only done three readings for projectors because they are so unique, but their charts are often so fascinating! Reflector charts are unique because all their energy centers are undefined, meaning energy flows through internally and externally with ease. They tend to be very sensitive to energy around them, environments, and what’s happening in the world.
Margaret Atwood is a best-selling fiction author and a 2/4 reflector. This is a powerful gift for Margaret as a writer. Her open space as a storyteller allows her to shape shift in creating a variety of characters, stories, voices, and even points of view. She has gate 50 defined, which is all about offering revelation and shock. I see this all the time in her writing. In fact, it even feels a bit prophetic at times (Hello, The Handmaid’s Tale). She has the Right Angle Cross of the Contagion (14/8 | 29/30). This is a powerful purpose she has that draws people into her world like a magnet. This is so apparent in her writing life, as readers continue to be captivated by her stories and her teaching. We are all better for her design as a reflector and the creative gifts she shares with us as a result.
