We are writing about our go-to hiding spot as a kid.
Did you have a favorite hiding place growing up? What was it like? Why did you go there? Was it a safe place for you? Can you paint a scene of when you hid and why? The thing about hiding is that it is often more than just the physical act, but the representation of something deeper– playfulness, imagination, fear, hiding of emotions. When you picture the spaces you hid and the context of why, how does that young hiding parallel with the way you hide/ or show up in your life now?
Writing example:
Here is an example from the memoir Hunger by Roxane Gay where she shares about how she hid herself in plain sight from a young age as she warred against her young body’s experience into adulthood.
“I was swallowing my secrets and making my body expand and explode. I found ways to hide in plain sight, to keep feeding a hunger that could never be satisfied — the hunger to stop hurting. I made myself bigger. I made myself safer.” - Hunger by Roxane Gay
Writing tip: Consider the deeper message of each story.
Under every story, there are layers of meaning. Before you write each prompt, consider what the overall message you want to convey with this writing is. To put it even more clearly, what would it be if the reader could take away only one thing from your story, essay, or poem?
“The story isn’t about the facts, it’s about the message.” - Neil Gaiman
Time to write:
Write your choice of a complete short story, essay, or narrative poem based on this prompt in 1-3 pages. Be sure to title and save your work.
Be sure to title and save your work. Don’t forget to take a deep breath and care for yourself after you write.
