Hi friends,
If you have been following along, then you know I have been on a black out bible poetry journey. A beautiful and illuminating art project that a number of folks are doing alongside me.
I just finished the book of Genesis and am now moving on to Exodus. I’ve always loved this book as it speaks to the journey of becoming free. Emphasis on the word journey here since the actual etymology of Exodus is road, movement, and way. And isn’t what the creative and healing process is all about? This great journey through, rather than around the resistance, the pain, the becoming.
I love the messages that came through both of these black out pieces. The first “I spoke to the fear and said let go of me” is a mantra we would all do well to adopt when the fear and overwhelm feels as though it is enslaving us. This is the reminder to take back our own power and speak up to the fear rather than being controlled by it.
This second piece reads “I am made to be known and so are you.” This is a message I am going to be keeping close by as the new year approaches. I struggle with trusting that I am allowed to be known and celebrated, even though I totally believe it for others. When I wrote this, I was surprised. This is always the case with the black out poetry. I never know what the end result will be. But this message was something I really needed to hear today. I hope it speaks to your heart as well. :)
If you are joining along in this challenge (you are also totally welcome to just watch my process unfold as well), then this week I encourage you to begin blacking out the book of Exodus (chapters 1-5). As always, feel free to read the text first, circle the words to create your poem, haiku, story, etc. Then fill the rest of the page in black. (micron/ fabre pens work great!)
Feel free to share your black out poetry in the comments on these posts each week as you’re writing and cheer one another on. You can also hashtag #blackoutbibleclub and @meganfebuary on the socials. :)
Wouldn’t it be amazing to finish blacking out the entire bible? I’m in! Are you??? I hope so! You can, of course, jump in and out at any time.
